Apple SuperDrive: Troubleshooting Upgrade Problems

I have a Macintosh II system with two 800K drives. I installed a SuperDrive but the SuperDrive would not recognize 1.4 MB disks. When a high-density disk was inserted in the new drive, the computer said that it was unreadable and wanted to initialize it which failed.

I tried a different SuperDrive, but I get the same results. Which steps did I miss?
The FDHD Upgrade Kit included the 1.4 MB FDHD SuperDrive, four ROM replacement chips to replace the older ROM version four chip set, and one SWIM chip to replace the IWM chip. All five chips must be replaced to recognize the SuperDrive. After upgrading the ROMs and SWIM, install System 6.0.2 or higher to support the SuperDrive.

The Macintosh IIx logic board supports the SuperDrive and does not require an upgrade.
