UNIX: Macintosh File Compression Utility (5/97)

I'm using an FTP product to transfer files from a UNIX host to the Macintosh. The UNIX files are in a compressed format noted by their ".z" extension. Is there a utility for the Macintosh that matches the compression technique used on the UNIX host? I've heard about public domain software called "MacCompress" but don't know how to get it.

MacCompress is a Macintosh application designed for compressing and uncompressing files compatible with the UNIX version of compress using modified Lempel-Ziv coding algorithm.

You can find the software where public domain software is commonly distributed, such as user groups.
