Optical drives that work with Mac OS X work with iTunes 4. Apple does not publish a list of supported optical drives. However, Apple will often add support to Mac OS X and its updates shortly after optical drives are released by third-party manufacturers.
Apple puts a high priority on supporting optical drives that are sold at the Apple Store (online and retail). There may be some lag time between when Apple starts selling a new optical drive and when a Mac OS X update is released that adds support for it. In the meantime, you may want to check the drive manufacturer's website to see if a driver that supports Mac OS X is available.
If you have updated Mac OS X to the latest version available through Software Update, and Apple System Profiler doesn't show that the drive can be used to burn discs, check the drive manufacturer's website to see if a driver is available.
