iPod (Click Wheel) shows low battery indicator during sync and iTunes "freezes"

iTunes for Mac OS X may stop responding or "freeze" if you try to sync an iPod (Click Wheel) that doesn't have enough charge. In Windows, iTunes may continue to work, but your iPod doesn't appear in the Source list.
This can happen when your iPod (Click Wheel) is connected to your computer over USB 2.0. While songs or files are transferred using USB 2.0, the iPod loses charge. Transferring songs or files when iPod isn't sufficiently charged can cause incomplete transfer, loss of the information being transferred, and may require a restore. It's best to charge iPod before transferring songs or files.

To prevent this symptom, make sure your iPod is fully charged before syncing. To charge the battery, either leave it connected to the USB port without performing a sync. Or you can connect iPod to the iPod Power Adapter using the iPod Dock Connector-to-FireWire Cable. Then connect the adapter to an electrical outlet. Either way, the built-in battery is 80 percent charged in about 2 hours, and fully charged in about 4 hours.

If iTunes is not responding in Mac OS X because of this, follow these steps:
  1. Force Quit iTunes.
  2. Open iTunes.
  3. Eject iPod.
  4. Make sure iPod is charged using the power adapter or consider using FireWire to sync if the battery indicator appears low.
  5. Connect iPod to your Mac and try syncing again.

In Windows:
  1. Quit iTunes.
  2. Eject iPod.
  3. Make sure iPod is charged using the power adapter or consider using FireWire to sync if it available to you.
  4. Connect iPod to your computer and try syncing again.
