This information only pertains to PowerBook models that have two serial ports rather than a single serial port. PowerBook models that have two serial ports include most of the PowerBook 100 series computers (140, 145, 145b, 170, 160, 165, 165c, 180 and 180c).
For information detailing serial printing from PowerBooks that have a single serial port search for the article titled "PowerBook: Printing to Serial Printer-Single Serial Port."
TO USE THE EXTERNAL MODEM PORT TO PRINT TO A SERIAL PRINTER
PowerBook With No Internal Modem- Select the desired printer driver in the Chooser (such as the StyleWriter II) on the left side of the window.
- On the right side of the Chooser window where it says, "Select a port," select the modem port instead of the printer port.
Even though you will have one of the control panels described below in your Control Panels folder you will not see the choices described (internal/external, compatible/normal, use Express Modem/use External Modem) in your control panel because your PowerBook has no internal modem and external modem to choose between.
PowerBook With Internal Modem
- Change the default setting in the one of the following control panels: Portable, PowerBook, PowerBook Setup, or Express Modem. The specific control panels and settings that need to be changed are listed below under each specific software version.
- Select the desired printer driver in the Chooser (such as the StyleWriter II) on the left side of the window.
- On the right side of the Chooser window where it says, "Select a port," select the modem port instead of the printer port.
System 7.0.1
- Change the default setting in the Portable control panel from Internal Modem to External Modem.
- Use the StyleWriter driver version 7.2.2 to correct a problem with the Portable control panel that occurred when selecting the Internal/External Modem setting.
System 7.1
- Change the default setting in the PowerBook control panel from Internal Modem to External Modem.
System 7.1 w/System Update 3.0, 7.1.1 or 7.5
- Change the default setting in the PowerBook Setup control panel from Compatible to Normal.
- Normal versus Compatible
In the Normal mode, the modem is addressed via the System 7 Communication Toolbox, and the external port is available for usage.
If your communication program is NOT compatible with the Communication Toolbox, set the PowerBook Setup control panel to Compatible. This mode prevents the external serial port from being addressed by other programs, as well as preventing communication with a serial printer.
Express Modem Software v1.5 or Later Installed
- Change the default setting in the Express Modem control panel from Express Modem to External Modem.
Apple Telecom 2.0
In the Express Modem control panel, remove the "x" in the box for the selection "use internal modem instead of external Modem Port".
