PowerBook: Modem Connections After Using Fax

After I send a fax with Apple's fax software v1.0.1, I'm unable to connect with on-line services like America Online with White Knight v11.12. In White Knight, I dial the number, the modems handshake, the dialing window clears, then I get a no connection message. Then I have to type a return several times to get any activity. When connecting via an external modem with the same software, I do not have this issue.
After sending a fax, the PowerBook modem is left with the Connection Mode set to "error control mode" (the modem's factory default, "&Q5"). This instructs the modem to make a connection using V.42/MNP. If the remote modem doesn't offer V.42/MNP, the modem falls back to standard asynchronous mode. During the fallback process, some remote modems, depending on how they're configured, may disconnect.

You can eliminate this problem by setting the PowerBook modem's connection mode to asynchronous mode, with no error correction protocol, via "AT" commands. From White Knight, MacTerminal, or any other terminal emulation program, simply enter AT&Q0 (zero, not the letter "O"), and press return.

From America Online, under the Go To menu, choose Customize Network Setup. In the Modem String field, enter &Q0. America Online will automatically insert the Modem String between the modem attention AT command and the dialing sequence. For example, assume you've configured America Online for tone dialing, you've entered the phone number 555-1212, and you've entered &Q0 as the modem string. The software would use the full dialing sequence AT&Q0DT555-1212.
