System 6.0.x Installation (10/94)


To install System 6, follow these instructions in the order presented. These instructions apply to all versions of System 6 (6.0.1, 6.0.5, 6.0.7, and so on).


REQUIRED DISKS

--------------

System 6 software comes as a set of 800K (double-density) disks or a set of 1.44MB (high-density) disks:



The set of four 800K disks includes System Tools, Utilities 1,

Utilities 2, and Printing Tools.



The set of two 1.44MB disks includes System StartUp and System

Additions.



The instructions in this document give the name of the 800K disk first, followed by the name of the 1.44MB disk in parentheses.



BACK UP FONTS AND DESK ACCESSORIES

----------------------------------

Before you install System 6, back up your fonts and desk accessories. You can back up fonts and desk accessories using the Font/DA Mover. Or you can make a copy of the System file on a floppy disk, and remove the fonts and desk accessories later, using the Font/DA Mover.



PREPARE FOR A CLEAN INSTALLATION

--------------------------------

1) Start up with the System Tools (or System Startup) disk. To do

this, turn on your Macintosh computer. If your Macintosh is already

on, choose Restart from the Special menu.



2) Put the System Tools (or System Startup) disk into the startup

floppy drive right after you hear the chime. The floppy disk icon

appears in the upper-right corner of the desktop above the hard

disk's icon.



If it doesn't appear there, choose Restart from the Special menu.

The disk ejects push it back into the drive immediately.



3) Double-click your hard-disk icon to open it.



4) Double-click your System Folder to open it.



5) Drag the Finder and System files to the Trash, and choose Empty

Trash from the Special menu.



INSTALL SYSTEM 6

----------------

1) Double-click the System Tools (or System StartUp) disk icon.



2) Double-click the Installer icon (not the Installer script). A

welcome message appears.



3) Click the OK button. The Easy Install screen appears.



At this point you have two options:



Easy Install, which installs the Macintosh system software and

printer software recommended for your computer model.



Customize Install, which lets you override the recommended software

and choose exactly what items to install.



Note: You must use the Customize option to install AppleShare workstation software.



Easy Install

------------

1) Click the Switch Disk button to select the disk where you want to

install System 6.



2) Click the Install button to do the Easy Install.



3) Follow the instructions on the screen. Messages appear to prompt you

for the proper disks. When installation finishes, a message

appears.



4) Click the Quit button.



5) Choose Restart from the Special menu.



Customize Install

-----------------

1) Click the Customize button. A screen appears.



2) Click the Switch Disk button to select the disk where you want to

install System 6.



3) Select the items you want to install from the scrolling window.

Hold the Shift key and click to select multiple items. Your

selections appear beneath the scrolling window.



4) When you've made your selections, click the Install button.



5) Follow the instructions on the screen. Messages appear, prompting

you for the proper disks. When installation finishes, a message

appears.



6) Click the Quit button.
