NetWare for Macintosh VAP 1.1: Phase 1/2 Conflict & Workaround

I have a 386 server running NetWare 2.15c and NetWare for Macintosh VAP
v1.1 on an Ethernet network. The Ethercard in the file server is a Western
Digital Star/Ethercard Plus (with AppleTalk) v3.07. There is also a Dayna
AppleTalk PC card v1.22 to support a LaserWriter NT for the network. A
Macintosh LC connects to the network with an Apple Ethernet card.

I have installed the VAP program three times and still can't get the
LaserWriter or the file server to show up in the Macintosh Chooser. I'm
running the driver for Phase II on the Macintosh LC.

I know that the Ethernet connection is good, because I also have Insignia
Solutions SoftPC Universal v2.5 and SoftNode v1.0 running on the Macintosh
LC. I can access the file server and run all the loaded applications (DOS
and Netbios).

You most likely have an AppleTalk Phase 1 versus Phase 2 conflict. The
NetWare for Macintosh VAP 1.1 only supports Phase 1. This prevents any
Phase 2 client from using the services.

Novell recommended a workaround. Upgrade to NetWare 2.2, and to the
Macintosh VAP version 2.2. This will provide the NetWare server with
AppleTalk Phase 2, and allow it to publish a LaserWriter printer queue that
Macintosh clients can use.
