Netwise offers the only RPC-based tools we're aware of for the Macintosh
operating system. Netwise has developed some RPC monitors and end-user
applications based on RPC for the PC market, but it offers only a
developers' toolkit for the Macintosh.
Also, IPT developed a peer-to-peer (Macintosh to Sun) network
communications application that maintains the native user environments on
both platforms.
Netwise RPC TOOL
----------------
The Netwise RPC TOOL for Macintosh computers on TCP/IP networks provides
remote procedure call technology for Apple platforms. The RPC TOOL allows
developers to build client/server applications for a wide variety of
hardware, operating systems, and network transport environments. RPC TOOL
for Macintosh supports Macintosh System 6.0 or later, and Symantec
Corporation's C development environment, THINK C, version 4.0.
The Macintosh RPC TOOL allows Macintosh applications to interoperate across
a TCP/IP network with applications running on diverse systems, including
DEC VAX computers running VMS and ULTRIX, PCs running DOS and OS/2, Sun
workstations, Unisys, Hewlett-Packard, and Data General hardware, and many
other systems running UNIX variations.
Information Presentation Technologies Sun-Partner
-------------------------------------------------
Sun-Partner symmetrically maps network protocols and operating system
commands between graphical user interfaces. Sun SPARCstations look like
Macintosh computers to Macintosh users, and Macintosh computers look like
Sun workstations in the OpenLook or SunView environments. Users can share
and exchange data from their own user interfaces. All networked devices
are available simultaneously to Sun and Macintosh users.
Sun-Partner supports LocalTalk, EtherTalk Phases 1 and 2, AppleTalk Filing
Protocols, and the Apple Data Stream Protocol (ADSP) for Macintosh
computers and TCP/IP ARP, RARP, and NFS protocols for Sun SPARCstations.
Each SPARCstation on a SunPartner LAN must have version 4.1 or later of
Sun's operating system and an Ethernet-to-LocalTalk connection to run on
Ethernet, or an sBus LocalTalk card from IPT to run on LocalTalk. An
optional sBus LocalTalk card is available. Without Macintosh System 7.0,
each Macintosh on a Sun-Partner network requires IPT's Personal Server
Network (PSN) software. A Sun and a Macintosh connection are required for
bidirectional networking.
On AppleLink, you can find contact information for the various vendors by
clicking the Library Index button to view the folder structure in the Tech
Info Library. An alphabetic listing of vendors is in the Third Party
Company Directory folder.
