FriendlyNet: Fiber-Optic Transceivers

I need to know if anyone manufactures a fiber transceiver for the Macintosh
to plug into the Quadra (Friendly Net connector). We're running fiber
instead of twisted/thin/thick Ethernet cable. It will be at Ethernet
speed, but the cable type is fiber. Do you know of any companies that have
such a product?

There are no FriendlyNet compatible fiber-optic transceivers available at
this time.  The Ethernet specification (10BASE-F) for data transmission
using fiber hasn't yet been approved as a final specification.  There are
several vendor-specific implementations of fiber-based Ethernet, but most
are incompatible with each other and with the proposed 10BASE-F
specification.  Several vendors have fiber-optic transceivers you can
attach to the FriendlyNet thicknet transceiver option.

If you have a fiber plant installed with an Ethernet running, you should
have access to these types of transceivers from the vendor who originally
supplied the fiber network components.  Allied Telesis, BlackBox, and
Canary all sell fiber transceivers.

On AppleLink, you can find contact information for the various vendors by

clicking the Library Index button to view the folder structure in the Tech
Info Library.  An alphabetic listing of vendors is in the Third Party
Company Directory folder.
